Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated Diwali this year aboard INS Vikrant, India’s first indigenously built aircraft carrier. The visit went beyond festive greetings, sending a strong message about India’s military readiness, maritime strength and support for the armed forces.

In a year when discussions around Diwali dates sparked nationwide interest and even prompted a lighthearted response from the French Embassy, the celebration has drawn added attention. For over a decade, PM Modi has maintained the tradition of spending Diwali with soldiers across various borders and bases. This year, he chose INS Vikrant, stationed off the coast of Goa and Karwar, to celebrate with naval officers and sailors.

Strategic Significance of the Visit

In his address, the Prime Minister highlighted the role of INS Vikrant as a symbol of India’s naval power. He stated that the carrier has β€œsent waves of fear across Pakistan,” reflecting the psychological and strategic impact of India’s advancing defence capabilities.

Modi also acknowledged the importance of interoperability among the Navy, Coast Guard and maritime commands, stressing that the Indian Ocean region is a central focus of India’s long-term security and geopolitical strategy.

A Festive Celebration with Purpose

The Prime Minister performed traditional Diwali rituals, distributed sweets and interacted with sailors posted far from their families. He praised their service and sacrifice, emphasizing that the nation draws strength from the dedication of its armed forces.

He also reiterated India’s push for Atmanirbharta (self-reliance) in defence production, calling INS Vikrant a landmark achievement under the Make in India initiative.

Maritime Power and Global Messaging

Strategic observers believe the celebration was aimed at reinforcing India’s naval presence amid growing tensions in the Indo-Pacific and Chinese maritime expansion. The timing and location of the celebration signal both national confidence and preparedness.

Continuing a Tradition of Frontline Festivities

From Kargil and Siachen to border posts and airbases, PM Modi has marked Diwali with the armed forces for many consecutive years. This year’s presence aboard INS Vikrant blends emotion, symbolism and strategy, underscoring India’s growing maritime power and defence priorities.
